Oops, I'm already behind.  Sorry for the late post.

Field trip information: A letter went home today (see Fieldtrip #2 post) explaining a $20 fee for those students attending the overnight field trip. Because a bus and driver have been chartered for this trip, it is costing more than anticipated.  Our class will work to cover these costs, with the above mentioned fee and various fundraising.  The bottle bring-in the first day after Thanks Giving weekend will be our first.

Our day:We started the day with a brief gathering in the gym to introduce an Book Exploration Passport. Students in the entire school are being encouraged to read books from different genres, fill in the corresponding page in their passport, get a sticker or stamp, and when completed, enter their passport for a prize.  Draws will be made randomly throughout the year.  This will be exciting, and encourages students to read from genres they may not otherwise explore.

Buddy Reading: Following this, we went to Ms. Noel's Grade 2/3 class, our little buddies.  Many of the students in Grade 5 were in Ms. Noel's first Grade 2 class, so that's fun!

Library Book Exchange happens on Fridays so please remember to have books for renewal at school. I like students to have a book at their desk for silent reading.  This can happen any time, not just set at scheduled times.

Math: We completed marking / reviewing pages 33-35 from the math package students were given a few days ago.  There were also given an accumulative Representing Numbers worksheet (two-sided) for completion Monday.

Girl #85: A Doukhobor Childhood - We continued reading this story, stopping to discuss as needed.  The portion we read was when Helen was transported by the police to the Residential School in New Denver and her experience upon her arrival.  It was very powerful, and many of us could feel her fear and great sadness, especially the horror of having her long, beautiful hair cut off.

Metaphors: We started with this form of Figurative Language because we found some examples in the above story.  We reviewed what was assigned for homework yesterday, and they were given some time to complete the last page.

French: We learned some conversational expressions, from Bonjour to Au revoir!  We will continue to practice these so if you want to learn some French at home, just ask your child!

Music: Mr. Rogers had them strumming to and singing "You put the lime in the coconut...."  They are having a great time learning to play the ukelele:)
