Happy Muffin Monday!  Thanks to Jacob's family who brought Tim Horton's muffins for us this morning!!

Mr. Redding took the kids to Music for the first half an hour; they worked on their song for the play.

Upon their return we started Unit 3 of Greek & Latin Roots, doing the first page of the package and the individual vocabulary cards together.  This package will be due Wednesday.

After recess was Math.  We did a one-minute drill and graphed its results.  Next, the kids worked on another practice sheet for representing numbers in standard and expanded forms from written words.  I pulled kids from the class to test their reading of numbers while they worked on their worksheets.

During gym we took a break from basketball and played 'Benchball'.

Back in class we began our Immigration Projects before the grade fours had to leave with Mr. Pfeiffer for the FSAs.  [see photos below] We had posters, iMovie, and an audio recording of an interview / poster combination.  I can hardly wait to see the rest of them!  *Reece was first but I don't have her picture yet.

We ended our day with book exchange and a chance to finish up assignments.  Anything not completed is homework for tomorrow.

REMINDERS:
1) Halloween candy data is needed for tomorrow.
2) Immigration projects are now past due, unless you have talked to me about it.
3) Students need to bring a tallish jar if they want to make Rock Candy.
4) Students need to bring a can for their Ugly Sticks.

*TOMORROW AND WEDNESDAY ARE EARLY DISMISSAL DAYS (12:30).  Bring an extra large snack for these two days:)

Thursday, November 2, 2017

Happy first snowfall, folks!  It sure is pretty and the kids sure are excited, not that Halloween wasn't enough!

Please ensure that your child comes to school with appropriate outdoor clothing and footwear.  The afternoon can be long if you're sitting around in wet clothing / shoes.

We started our day with Agendas, then finished some notes about Recognizing Place Value and Value in our Math Interactive notebooks.

Next, students finished up "Halloween Leftovers", a comprehension assignment from yesterday.  When done, they went to the computer lab to finish their Inspiration web from Library.  Finally, when all of that was done, saved and printed off, students were allowed to go onto Mathletics for a short while.  This didn't go so well for some students so we ended up silent reading for the last 10-15 minutes before recess.

After recess we continued working on the Art Cards.  Students also worked on their science Matter crossword puzzle and French Halloween puzzles while waiting for paint or my assistance.  Many thanks (as always) to Mrs. Campbell for helping kids refocus and get caught up with assignments!

After lunch, we worked on the puzzles a bit more before heading to PE at 1:00, when we played a full court basketball game.

We finished our day with Career Education: discussing its focus and purpose.  I read part of Michelle Garcia Winner and Pamela Crooke's book You are a Social Detective  about social thinking.  We set up duotangs for this and started to write about our 'school smarts'.  We will hopefully continue this tomorrow.

Enjoy your evening.  Don't forget to read the notice that I sent home about early dismissal days next week.  The letter itself is also posted previous to this blog entry.

Also, the Immigration Projects are due Monday!  Presentations will begin!!

Tuesday, October 17, 2017

Good day, folks.  Here's our day:

We started with math this morning, marking the perimeter worksheet from yesterday and reviewing aspects of geometry, including the names of polygons. [See below.]

Mr. Redding took them to PE today for 30 minutes before recess.

After recess, we created "Halloween Inchies", including Frankie, a pumpkin patch, and a monster.  A couple more and we will be ready to mount them together.  I'll post photos then.

After lunch we looked at a couple more Immigration Projects from past students.  Remember, these are due November 6th; presentations begin that week!  Look back through these posts to see the write-up if you don't have the original outline and assessment.  I showed the kids today where this information is on this blog.

Next, Mrs. Stewardson, the Indigenous support worker, joined our class while we learned about / revisited the Medicine Wheel.  We watched a short segment of the TV show Heartland where Victor, a Cree, explained the Medicine Wheel to Amy.  Then we talked about and wrote down various aspects of the colours and circle.  We cut the line between yellow and red, then mended the circle while binding it together with brown yarn.  Ask your child what all of this means, please.
These are the ones that have been completed.

Reminders:
School photos on Thursday!
Tupperware Fundraiser orders are due back Oct. 25th.

Happy October!  I sure felt like autumn this morning, and I hear that snow is coming soon!

Our day started with music with Mr. Redding.

Upon their return to the classroom, we talked about the swearing in of Canada's newest Governor General Julie Payette.  We will be learning more about her and talking about the role of Canada's Governor General.

Journal Entry - done at school - the students wrote about their reflections on Screen Agers, the technology video we saw last week.  If you didn't have a chance to see, apparently you can find it on Youtube.

After recess was math.  Drills That Thrill included adding to nine with 3 second and 2 second intervals!  Next we watched Rob from Math Antics explain what mathematics is.  Students then explained what they had learned from the video.

We started basketball in P.E. today, just dribbling and gaining control of the ball.

After lunch the Immigration Project was introduced.  [See outline below.]
We also watched an iMovie that a previous student had made about his great grandfather.

We ended our day with Agendas and book exchange.

Immigration Project
DUE November 6th, 2017
[Presentations November 6-10, 2017]

Purpose: to understand the circumstances around one’s decision to leave their homeland and make a new life in Canada (or the New World). Also, to reinforce the understanding that Canada is a nation of immigrants.

o   Who immigrated? (person or group of people)
o   Where did they emigrate from and to what part of Canada did they come?
o   What was happening in their homeland? Were they forced to leave?
o   Why did they decide to emigrate? (May be strongly tied to above.)
o   When did they (as an individual or as a group) come to Canada?
o   How did they travel? (boat, plane, train)
o   How long did it take?
o   How were they treated once they arrived / settled in Canada?
o   And anything else you want to include.

Project Description:

Include a map showing the approximate route your relative/person/group took to arrive in Canada, with an approximate time period.  If your person traveled within Canada to get to their destination, include that on the map as well.

Include a small flag of your immigrant’s homeland.

Be prepared to explain why your person came to Canada: How? Why? When?
Where? (See above questions.)

Assessment:
You will be assessed on how well you explain your immigrant’s life and experience, and the creative way in which you do it.  Use the above questions to guide your project.  You may choose how you would like to present your information.  Here are some suggestions:

-Prezi                                              -Suitcase with items in it
-iMovie                                           -Diary
-Stop motion                                   -Poster
-Oral presentation                             -Map of trip with explanations
-role play                                        -A letter or series of postcards

Friday, January 13, 2015 / C'est vendredi le 13, janvier 2017

Happy Friday!  Here's our day:

Reading with our 'little buddies' was how we started our morning.  Then back to class for three Immigration Project presentations.  We will have two more on Monday, and that's it.  They were different yet again today, and very interesting.  We had a poster, an oral description, and a videoed (??) interview.  Photos of two of the presenters are below. (The third escaped me!)

Cooper also gave us an update on the kittens that were born over a week ago, now, and are starting to open their eyes.
After recess and P.E. (badminton), we did some math involving measurement and metric conversions.  Students are at different stages of understanding with this metric conversion stuff; we will keep working on it.  I want the students to struggle a bit while using "king henry died by drinking chocolate milk" so that they can work through what is confusing them.  They have a lot of prefixes and base units of measure to mix together.

Then it was time for Agendas and desk clean out for the weekend.  Right after lunch was Exploration Friday (art, drama, or technology).  In art we practiced some line drawing (snowflakes) as a warm-up, then created value using line, and finally started a Zentangle piece.

Enjoy your weekend!

Thursday January 12, 2017 / C'est jeudi le 12, janvier 2017

Today's Immigration Project presenters are pictured below.  Once again, we had a nice variety of immigrant stories, the earliest arriving in Canada in 1678!  Wow!

After the presentations, we listened to the following radio broadcast:

CBC DAY BREAK interview includes an interview about the OKeefe Ranch in the Okanagan which celebrates its 150th birthday [35:32], same as Canada.  I thought that this fits in rather nicely with our immigration projects and is an interesting piece of history.  http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/programs/daybreaksouth/7-8-00-am-1.3930457

Then it was time for Agendas and icecream cones (provided by Kenzie) :) Thanks for the surprise treat!

After recess, we marked / reviewed the last two pages of the metric conversion booklet, and worked on the "Muddled Measurements" worksheet.  *This is due tomorrow.

Mr. Pfeiffer took them to P.E. today; they played badminton.

After lunch, we marked the personification practice sheet, finished up the hyperbole and personification snow globes, and then worked to finish needle felting the quilt squares.  They are looking wonderful!

Wednesday, January 11, 2017 / C'est mercredi le 11, janvier 2017.

Sorry for the late again, Folks.  We had a staff meeting after school and then... time flies when you're having fun!

Our morning started with five Immigration Project presentations.  Once again, they were all fabulous!  I am truly amazed at how well the students are doing with these:)

Students were introduced to 'personification' today, and were given a practice sheet to complete for tomorrow.  They were also reminded to complete and have ready for marking / review all of their hyperbole worksheets from last week.  Also, two more snow globes are to be completed by Friday: hyperbole and personification. Thanks for your encouragement and to make sure that they are done.

After recess, we played badminton (with the nets up) for quite some time, practicing serving and short controlled volleys.

Then we were back to the class for Social Thinking lessons about defeating Rock Brain.  Because this took longer than we had (We extended our time in the gym.), we continued with this lesson after lunch as well, until 1:30.  *I will be taking these books in some time soon to ensure that everyone is keeping up, and is demonstrating an effort to do their best.  We had a talk about this today, so please encourage neatness and taking pride in one's work, even if just gluing things into a cahier.

Next, we marked our metric measurement booklets.  Students also were given time to complete the last two pages; these are due tomorrow.

Lastly, we reviewed les jours de la semaine, sang them to the tune of the Flintstones, and introduced #s 1-20.  Students worked on a cross-word type activity; this is to be handed in tomorrow, mainly for accountability:)

Enjoy your evening.

Tuesday, January 10, 2017 / C'est mardi le 10, janvier 2017

Wow!  Another very busy day, and so productive!

We started with five 'Immigration Project' presentations this morning, each of them unique and very well done.  I am so impressed with these guys:)  I have a couple of photos but also videoed them to send to parents via FreshGrade.  (Be patient with me.)  I may have to take some photos tomorrow but will add them to today's post, so check back.

Then, in math, we marked the first three pages of our metric booklet; the next two were assigned after a brief overview.  Converting metric units is basically multiplying and dividing by multiples of 10; the students are gradually feeling more comfortable with this.

After recess, Tina came in for the ArtStarts program.  First, she unpacked the clay fish, which look quite wonderful.  (photos of display)  Tina and I were hoping for a different outcome / look for these salmon but had difficulties with glazes and firing.  Although I think they look great, we have decided to make new ones using different glazes so these lucky students will get two fish!  One can't be too disappointed about that.

The main focus of art today was getting started on the needle felted wool quilt squares.  Yesterday, students researched an image of their chosen flora / fauna.  Today they drew these onto square pieces of paper in preparation for applying these to their wool squares.  And boy, did these young people do well!  They are in different stages of completion but are doing amazingly well.  Tina and I were tickled pink with the results thus far.  I'll post photos after next art session.

*The salmon habitat artwork is now complete and hanging in our hallway.  Here's a sneak peak:

After lunch, we played badminton during P.E.  Today our focus was practicing serving (control and distance) as this is somewhat vital to a game:)

We ended our day doing Agendas, reading, colouring some pictures that Jackie had brought in for everyone, and getting math done so that there wouldn't be any homework.  We also had BOOK EXCHANGE with Mrs. Astra, and of course, clean up.  I continue to be impressed with the way the students are taking increasing responsibility regarding cleaning up the classroom at the end of the day.  It is noted and very much appreciated by the custodians.

Monday, January 9, 2017 / C'est lundi le 9, janvier 2017

Good evening, Folks.  Sorry for the late post, but here's our day:

Students started off developing their typing skills using Master Key in the computer lab.
Next, they researched some information about the flora / fauna of their choice, keeping in mind its connection to salmon.  Students also located good images of their subject for an upcoming art project (of course!).

After recess, we worked on a couple of pages of our metric booklet.
Then they went to music with Mr. Redding for 60 minutes (my prep time).

After lunch and Agendas, we started the Immigration Project presentations!  We had four great presentations this afternoon; some pictures follow:

Welcome to the first school day of 2017.  Happy New Year to one and all!

We started our day with a circle talk, discussing our holidays and special memories.  We also checked in on how the Immigration Projects were coming; students shared their ideas.  (See below)

Next, students wrote in their Reflective Journals for about half an hour.  They were permitted to write about anything so I look forward to what they chose to share.

After recess, we played Perimeter Scoot as a review activity for math.  The students demonstrated a very good grasp of this concept, remembering to include the units of measure and everything!

Social Thinking was next, reviewing what it is and why we are learning about it.  I introduced Superflex and one of the Unthinkables, and read Superflex Takes On Rock Brain.  Then the students drew themselves as Superflex, reflecting on their Social Thinking skills.

Finally, after gym, we watched a video by the Bazillions reminding us about similes and metaphors.  Students were asked to think of one or the other, and we were to identify it.
Similes and Metaphors - a great song by The Bazillions https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uoSBVNUO2LU&list=PLp6MCuWcvpwr7km_Cy52ahFQibb5ac2rn&index=4

To end our day, the students filled in their agendas and did book exchange with Mrs. Astra.

*The students finished the World Map puzzle today!  This was a challenge, especially missing a piece of Africa:(
