I have decided to awaken my class blog from previous years as a method of communicating what's happening in our classroom. Thus far, the kids have been using a temporary planner, but this should change come Monday! The new planners / agendas will be in full use as soon as they come in. The purpose of this blog is to offer further explanation of some of the activities and projects that we are working on.
FreshGrade will be used for more personal interactions; this blog will be more general. It will showcase some assignments and projects, as well as provide links to videos that we watch in class. Parents / guardians are invited to access this blog whenever you wish, the choice is completely yours.
Having said all that, here's what we did Friday:
Think of a time... is an assignment that required students to reflect on a time when they were successful, and a time when they failed. Yes, we used the word 'failed' because not everything works out. The focus was on "How did you feel?" and "What did you do when it didn't work out at first?"
After recess, we walked to Mount Cartier Court where we met up with Jesse to harvest vegetables and seeds for drying. Many thanks to both Chase's dad and Hayden's dad for accompanying us.
After lunch, we completed agendas, cleaned out our desks for Monday, and some had a few minutes to work on their personal coat of arms. (More on this later.)
Then we participated in the Terry Fox run.
Monday is "Orange Shirt Day", as you can see, so students are reminded to wear orange. We will be attending an assembly to discuss this further. Our class has been learning the chorus of an Indigenous song, and will be performing it at the assembly.
Previously, we have been exploring Fixed and Positive Growth Mindset, and completed this activity as a whole class.
Students have also been learning about the three levels of government and the responsibilities of each; some are shared. With a federal election happening in the near future, we are also taking time to identify the leaders of each level of government, including the Governor General, Julie Payette. We learned about her person coat of arms, and students are in the midst of creating their own.
During lunch, as part of our 'Farm to Table' teachings with Jesse, students are applying the stickers from their fruits and veggies to our bar graph. The idea is to consider how far some products travel to our stores.
I hope that this gives you some idea of our focus these past few weeks in September.
