Greetings!

It was a busy week (the last of April) and May will be even busier.  Please see the 'Reminders' at the bottom of the page; we have several events coming that require signed waivers and/or extra helpers!

We started our day with an Assembly and recognized three students from our class: Devyn for his Scratch coding project, and Sydnie and Justin for their Canadian mining projects.  Congratulations!

Book exchange, silent reading, and Independent Novel studies followed Assembly.  Most students have started their novel study projects.  If not, I recommend that they get started very soon.  These projects will be due for presenting in four weeks.

I also took advantage of this time to test a few students on their human body units.  I am impressed with the work that the kids are putting into learning their body systems.  Remember, I am looking for references / resources used and a thoughtful question about each body system as part of their unit.  I revamped the rubric, and have included the new one here.

Assessment for overall Human Body Unit –Revised Rubric
*Your science mark for this Human Body unit will be based on the marks for each sub-unit, and the number of body systems that you complete.  Your effort mark for the term will reflect use of class time.

Assessment Rubric for each unit                                                                                                               /12

Question
& Answer
The question is very basic and has not been clearly answered.
The question is very basic, but thoroughly answered.
The question is thoughtful and basically answered.
The question is thoughtful and has been fully answered.

*A good question is one that cannot be simply answered by ‘googling’ it. For example:    How long is the small intestine? (not a ‘good’ question for this purpose)
What does the appendix do, and can someone live without it?  (better)

After recess, the students worked on a Math Antics area package; most finished all of the questions that were assigned.  They seem to have a good grasp of calculating area, and understanding the difference between area and perimeter.

Following math they have music with Mr. Rogers, and practiced their recorders for the concert on "Music Monday". A few of the classes will be performing in the gymnasium for other classes; parents are quite welcome to attend.  I believe the concert starts around 11:00 a.m.

PAC Subway lunch today, for those who put in orders.  Thank you, PAC, for organizing this!

After lunch, Mrs. O'Neill came into our class for a surprise art lesson.  We first watched the video "Gifts from the Thunderbird" about the Life and Art of Norval Morrisseau.  Next, students drew and started to colour their own animal pieces in the style of Mr. Morrisseau.  They will be quite stunning when they are done:)
PS) The pulp birds are being added to the tree as they are finished.  Some of the students' pulp bowls are also on display in the hallway:)

For the last twenty minutes of the day, we watched a couple of very short videos about food, as I had not had time to show them yesterday during the Beyond Recycling lesson.  Please sign the waiver for the field trip (on Tuesday, May 3) to the community garden that was sent home today. *We could really use a couple of volunteers for this event, if you are able to join us!

Reminders:
Field trip waiver - sign and return  May 3rd!
Swimming waiver  - sign and return if you have not done so already Swimming starts Wed. 4th!
Sports Day - May 20th is our school sports day... if you can help with this, please contact the school.
