What a beautiful, sunny Thursday it turned out to be!

We spent our morning in the computer lab, assessing each other's Scratch projects.  These kids have done a great job.

After recess we reviewed the four sentence types, and then took a look at the two main parts of sentences: Subject and Predicate.  We put notes into our Interactive Notebook.
After lunch, we did a fun group activity to reinforce our learning about subjects and predicates; then the students were assigned a short worksheet.  This will be due tomorrow.

This afternoon, we also watched some more presentations: Part I of Evan and Justin's iMovie, Griffin's (uranium-Saskatchewan) and Robbie's (coal-Cumberland) Power Points, and Senna and Tiffany's brochure.  We sure are learning a lot about mining in Canada.  Tomorrow we will see the remaining three groups's presentations, and Part II of Evan and Justin's iMovie, all going well.

We finished our day discussing a new project: an Independent Novel Study (see description below).  Please sign your child's sheet indicating that you have seen this assignment.

Independent Novel Study

Choose a book that you are presently reading or will read this term.  Using an old video case, complete the following:
1)                Design a cover (front, back, and spine) for your book. It must include the title, author, and illustrator (which is you!).
2)                On the back, write a brief summary of the book.  Make us want to read it!
3)                Inside the case, depict the setting.  This should be an aspect of the setting that is important to the novel. It must address both the place and time of the                     story.
You may wish to draw or paint this, and attach it inside the case.
4)                Inside the case, include a variety of items that pertain to the story.  These items will be loose and therefore removable.

For example, if it is the story of Winnie the Pooh by A.A.  Milne, you might have a little bear, a honey pot, and a stick to represent Rabbit’s home. Your setting would be Rabbit’s home in the 100 Acre Woods at the time when Pooh got stuck.  (Note, it is not a specific date, in this case.) Other items you might include could be other ‘Pooh’ characters, truffles, a little fishing rod, and other things that were included in the story.

Due date:  This project is due by the end of May, but don’t leave it until the end.  You will present it to the class, explaining your items and describing your book.
