Good-day, everyone.

Several students were away this morning so we started our day reading Fatty Legs, a true story written by Christy Jordan-Fenton & Margaret Pokiak-Fenton, about a young girl's experience in Residential School in Aklavik, Northwest Territory. The following is a quote from the book; it's a beautiful analogy.

(p.13) [Olemaun Pokiak is a young girl trying to convince her father to let her go to the outsiders' school so that she can learn how to read.]
He crouched to my height.  He picked up a rock with one of his hands and held it out to me. "Do you see this rock?  It was once jagged and full of sharp, jutting points, but the water of the ocean slapped and slapped at it, carrying away its angles and edges.  Now it is nothing but a small pebble.  That is what the outsiders will do to you at the school."

After reading a chapter and looking at some photographs in the back of the book, we went onto Language Arts: specifically learning about fact vs opinion.  First, we set up our L.A. Interactive Cahier.  We did one activity together (which we pasted into our Interactive Cahier for later reference), then a second page was assigned; students could work on their own or with a partner. *They will have both their Int. Cahier and the assignment in their Working Binder for you to check out.

After recess, we continued with basketball skills.  The kids played Pacman tag while dribbling basketballs.

Next was Agendas and silent reading while I checked math homework.  In Math, we did a couple of 'Complements of Ten' drills, marked our addition worksheet, then practice more single-digit column addition.  Both sides of this sheet are to be done for tomorrow.

This took us to the 12:30 dismissal time, so that was our day.  I look forward to meeting with parents after lunch today and tomorrow.
