Good afternoon!  Here's a look at our exciting day:

We started our day reading letters from our partner class in Campbell River; we will be teaching each other about the biome in which we live.  The students chose letters from C.R. students to whom they will write as our year progresses.

Then off to P.E. with Mr. Cadegan!

After recess, Matt visited our class to talk about the up-coming Nordic Skiing program; the grade fours from Mrs. Gadbois's class joined us.  The grade threes in our class stayed for the presentation although they will be doing downhill skiing / boarding later this month. The grade fours were fitted for boots, and a reminder of what to wear on ski days was reviewed.  Our first day is the 17th (Friday) for Nordic, and the 14th for Alpine.

We had some 'Ketchup and Pickles' time before marking / reviewing the subtraction math from yesterday.  We also started working on the next page of the package; we will continue tomorrow.

After lunch, we did a matching activity that defined different landforms, added snow to our moose from before the break, and had Book Exchange at the end of the day.

Hello, everyone.

Mrs. Vickers was our special guest for the day, working with the kids for session two of Wildsight: Getting to Know our Wetlands.  Today's focus was "water".   We worked in the classroom and went outside.  Below are some pictures of our day.

Please check out the "Notices" on the Agenda - they are very important.  Paper reminders went home for the variety show, specific district track and field events for your child, subway lunch order form, and the class photo.

Considering natural vs human impacts in our environment

These are some of the 'journeys'  the water molecules took while playing this game.  As you can see, the water cycle is more complex than most cycles portray.

The second card above is the same game but introduces human impacts into the water cycle.

Mrs. Vickers also did a demonstration about how much clean fresh water is available to us.  She starts with 1 L of water and we end up with just 1 drop.  The relative amounts are shown on the picture below.

We went outside for a water conservation exercise.  Teams represented three types of communities with either an abundant water supply, scarce water supply, or lots of water but it was dirty and not close to the town so required a long trek to get it.

In the afternoon, we went outside again, this time to look at a model of our local watershed.  Students had to identify the different rivers and mountains on the model - not a simple thing for many of them.

Welcome to the first day of June!  Yikes!
Here's our day:

We had Buddy Reading with our grades 2/3 buddies, and later watched /listened to a story about a donut for National (or maybe International) Donut Day!  storybookonline.org

Next, it was time for more testing about human body systems.  The last day for testing is coming up next week so your child needs to be ready!  Eight people have done their two, two haven't been tested on any, and the rest have done one.
*Some students stayed in at recess and lunch time to get tested - showing great initiative!

After recess, we marked / reviewed the visual representations of equivalent fractions, working on the second side of the worksheet together.

Then we finished putting the invitations together, so your child has yours in his / her Agenda. RSVP once you know how many people in your family will be attending.

We also cleaned out our desks in preparation for our guest artist, Mrs. Duncan, this afternoon.  She helped the kids finish painting their sturgeons.

We ended our day with some fun time on the playground because we had missed PE class.

Enjoy your weekend!

Good afternoon, all.   Here's our day:

Ella keeping an eye on things!

We started our morning with the descriptive writing piece from last week.  Several students switched their topic and wrote about their weekend - the focus still being the same: to be descriptive in one's explanation / story telling.

Next, we started to learn about the Interior Plains, another geographical region.  Because time is running short, we will do an open-book quiz on Friday, demonstrating that students can locate and pick out important information in an article. This also takes any "quiz writing" pressure!

We had a special guest artist in again, today to guide students with their watercolour painting and sturgeon artwork.  We did not finish them; the outlines of the sturgeon are present but these will be finished next Tuesday.  Students did paint the sand and rocks on the bottom of "the lake", and added water around the sturgeon outline.
Guest artist, Mrs. Duncan, directs the watercolour painting lesson.

REMEMBER: SPORTS DAY TOMORROW!  Wear a hat, sunscreen, dress with layers, wear good shoes, bring a water bottle!

This afternoon, we reviewed the different ways to compare fractions and two pages of practice were assigned for Thursday.  [See Friday's post for a video link and summary of ways to compare fractions.]

Last thing today, students continued their independent studies about the human body; I tested several more students.

REMINDER: SWIMMING TOMORROW FOR GRADE FIVES!

Good afternoon!  Today was a busy and eventful one.  Here's what we did:

We started off with a brief math quiz about fractions: what do they know at this stage?  We had lots of time after this quiz so we watched a Math Antics video about the four different types of fractions: zero, proper, whole, and improper, completing an exercise sheet as we went.  We will continue to work on the package tomorrow.

Mr. Redding also took the kids for the school-wide run just before recess.  Some students are really challenging themselves to beat their previous time so that they may qualify for the district track meet.

After recess, special guest Mrs. Duncan came in to draw sturgeon with the kids.  First, she reviewed the external anatomy of a white sturgeon, then they practiced drawing different parts (caudal fin, snout, scutes, and general shape of the fish).  She even brought in photos she had taken of the metal fish on Mackenzie Avenue, in front of the Main Street CafĂ©.

Next, Mrs. Duncan had the students drawing full length images, including all of the fins.  Finally, they did some shading.  Below are a series of drawings throughout the session.

After lunch, we were busy learning about Niagara Falls in the St. Lawrence Lowlands, and watched another couple of short videos for a clearer picture of this area.  The links are here:

For the last hour or so of the day, students worked independently on their Human Body units.  A few students are almost ready for oral "testing" with me.  They must remember to have a question about their body system and be able to answer it, as well as explain how the particular body system works.

*QUIZ notice!  We will wrap up the St. Lawrence Lowlands with a short quiz, just like the others:)  The students are getting really good at anticipating what types of things will likely be asked on the quiz.
